Why Does My Boyfriend Take His Phone Everywhere?

Even when he goes to the bathroom or takes a shower, my boyfriend brings his phone. Has he always been like this, or has something changed lately?

The Story

I never used to pay much attention to what my boyfriend did with his phone. Then one day, I started noticing it. He takes it to the bathroom, brings it with him when he showers, and even carries it into the kitchen just to get a glass of water. At first, I shrugged it off. Lots of people are glued to their phones these days, right?

But once I noticed, I couldn't stop noticing. Every time he gets up, I catch myself looking at his hands. And sure enough, there's his phone.

The weird thing is, I can't remember whether he always did this. Has he always carried his phone everywhere? Or is this something new? I haven't actually seen anything suspicious. Still, I can't get it out of my head.

Did I just start getting suspicious for no reason? Or has something really changed?

Perspectives from the Lumieny editorial team

I mean, isn't it a little strange to take your phone even when you're going to the bathroom or taking a shower? I don't get why he can't be away from it for a few minutes. Could he be getting messages he doesn't want his girlfriend to see?

I see it differently. Plenty of people carry their phones everywhere now. I take mine to the bathroom and keep it with me around the house, too. It could just be a habit. Isn't jumping straight to cheating a bit much?

I dated someone like that. He used to leave his phone lying around, but then he started taking it into the bathroom every time. I asked about it, and he said it was nothing. Later, I found out he'd been messaging another woman. Ever since then, sudden changes like that catch my attention.

My boyfriend barely puts his phone down, either. But when I think about it, I'm the same way. If my phone isn't nearby, I get restless, like there's something I need to check. So these days, I don't worry much about him carrying his around.

Isn't the bigger question whether his behavior has changed? If he's always done it, maybe it's just a habit. But if it started suddenly and he gets angry or avoids the conversation when you ask why, that's worth talking about.

The results concern password-sharing preferences, not why a boyfriend carries his phone everywhere.

My Boyfriend Says Using His Phone in the Bathroom Helps Him Relax

My boyfriend takes his phone into the bathroom as soon as he wakes up. He goes in three or four times a day, and each time, he stays in there for 20 to 30 minutes. He brings his phone every single time.

He also has all his phone notifications turned off. Sometimes he seems uncomfortable if I need to use his phone for a moment. So one day, I asked what he was doing in the bathroom for so long.

He explained that scrolling on his phone in the bathroom is his way of unwinding. He even offered to show me his phone if I was suspicious. I already know his passcode, actually.

But I don't want to search through his phone. His explanation makes sense to me, at least partly. Still, something about it leaves me uneasy. Should I just accept this as an everyday habit?

He Turned Back to Get His Phone Before Taking a Shower

I've been with my boyfriend for over a year, and lately he takes his phone absolutely everywhere. He used to leave it on the couch or in the bedroom. Now he grabs it even when he's just going to the bathroom or kitchen.

The other day, something really stood out. He was on his way to take a shower, then suddenly turned around and went back to the bedroom. Turns out he'd forgotten his phone on the charger. Seriously, does he need it with him even while he's showering?

So I asked him why. He said I was being overly suspicious and trying to start a problem. But I've never gone through his phone behind his back. I don't even want to.

It's just that he never used to do this, and now he does. Am I really overreacting just by asking about it?

He Says He Carries His Phone Everywhere Because He Once Lost It

I've been with my boyfriend for two years. I tend to worry a lot, and sometimes I wonder whether he might be cheating. But I've never actually caught him lying. When he says he's going to see friends, that's what he's doing.

Still, he takes his phone everywhere, even to the bathroom or when he's going to shower. When I asked why, he said he'd lost a phone before, and ever since then he's kept it close.

He doesn't spend all our time together staring at it. He doesn't deliberately hide his screen when he texts, and we watch videos on it together. If I ask to see it, he seems annoyed but still lets me.

That's what makes this so confusing. I want to believe his explanation, but I still notice how rarely he leaves the phone behind. Once, he actually did leave it near me, and I got upset with him about something else. Could that have made him even more careful?

Days later, she checked his phone again and asked about a message; he deleted it and became angry. Expert Perspectives

The ancient Stoic philosopher Epictetus argued that people are troubled not so much by events themselves as by the judgments they make about them.

Your boyfriend taking his phone into the bathroom or shower area is something you can observe. The thought that he's hiding something is an interpretation of that behavior. He may carry his phone out of habit, or because he once lost one.

The important distinction is that a change in someone's behavior isn't the same as a change in how you notice that behavior. You might have only recently started paying attention to something he's always done. Or his behavior really may have changed.

Applying Epictetus's perspective here means separating what you've observed from the meaning you've attached to it, rather than rushing to conclusions about motives you haven't confirmed.

A Moment to Reflect

Lately, you've started noticing your boyfriend taking his phone whenever he leaves the room. He takes it to the bathroom, and even when he's just getting a glass of water. Has his behavior actually changed? Or have you only recently started paying attention? Noticing something for the first time doesn't mean it started happening recently.

What you've seen is that he carries his phone with him. The idea that he's hiding something is still an unconfirmed interpretation. Separating the two may help you understand where your uneasiness is coming from.

That doesn't mean you have to force yourself to stop feeling uncomfortable. If you're curious, you can ask him why. Rather than focusing only on whether he'll show you his phone, notice how he responds to your question and explains himself. If you're still uneasy afterward, consider what exactly is bothering you.

Even if he takes his phone into another room, your thoughts don't have to follow him there. Choosing not to spend your day monitoring someone else's behavior is also a choice you can make.
